OneLegacy is Southern California’s organ, eye and tissue recovery organization, serving as the region’s bridge to life, connecting donors to patients in need.
Organ, eye and tissue donation in the United States is more than just a pink donor dot on your driver’s license – there is a well-established and experienced network of federally-designated, non-profits across the country, called Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs), all working together to save lives. OneLegacy is the nation’s largest OPO, serving the diverse Southern California region. Working with hospitals, physicians, transplant centers and the community, OneLegacy educates about and facilitates donation, as well as builds a community of long-term support for the families who give the generous gift of life.
Integrity
Our lifesaving work relies on public trust. Therefore, we practice transparent, honest, and ethical behavior in all interactions and hold ourselves to the highest standards.
Compassion
In every situation, we are empathetic with and advocate for the donor, donor family, and recipients, ensuring that final wishes are honored, families are comforted, and waiting recipients receive lifesaving and healing transplants.
Stewardship
We are accountable for and committed to the responsible use of our resources, so we can fulfill our mission, support our communities and prepare for the future.
Diversity & Inclusion
We seek to be representative of the communities we serve in order to ensure respect and dignity for our donors, their families, donation partners, and our staff. We believe in the inherent worth of all people.
Urgency
Our constant efforts to improve our outcomes are driven by a sense of urgency to save and heal the lives of those on the waitlists.
Innovation & Excellence
We strive to be at the forefront of our field, recognized as an industry leader, and passionate about saving and healing lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation.
Collaboration
We honor every donor's decision to save and heal lives by uniting partners in our community to fulfill that decision.
Regional Organ Procurement Agency (ROPA) is established with headquarters at UCLA Medical Center.
Drs. Robert and Rafael Mendez incorporate OneLegacy under the name Southern California Organ Procurement and Preservation Center, Inc. (SCOPPC) to recover kidneys at hospitals not served by ROPA and to provide perfusion services to St. Vincent Medical Center's kidney transplant program.
HCFA designates Kern, Inyo, San Bernardino, Riverside and Tulare counties to SCOPPC. Although OPOs are assigned specific service areas, hospitals throughout the United States were allowed to contract with the OPO of their choice. This practice allows for Los Angeles County hospitals to continue working with SCOPPC and some Inland Empire Hospitals to remain with ROPA.
SCOPPC changes its name to the Southern California Organ Procurement Center (SCOPC) to reflect the organization’s focus on the procurement of organs for transplantation. In the face of increasing public pressure, HCFA requires OPOs to meet minimum standards to retain their federal designation to serve their respective communities.
SCOPC changes its name to OneLegacy to better communicate the value that donation brings to donors, families and recipients. OneLegacy develops the first Electronic Donor Record and web-based Organ Offer System, which was ultimately made a U.S. requirement in 2006.
OneLegacy and Donate Life California, in collaboration with Steve Jobs and Governor Schwarzenegger, create the world's first Living Donor Electronic Referral System to enable self-referral and altruistic donation, as well as the life-saving kidney chains. In 2011, OneLegacy founds OneLegacy Foundation to support research, public education and patients and families.
OneLegacy moves its headquarters to Azusa. Aside from the 98,772-square-foot office building, OneLegacy will also build an additional 50,000-square-foot transplant recovery and research center and a 16,000-square-foot conference space.
With seven offices across the seven-county greater Los Angeles area, OneLegacy serves 215 hospitals, 9 transplant centers and a diverse population of 20 million.
